CanGEA Annual Meeting 2012

April 23, 2012 - CanGEA held its Annual General Meeting for the Association. The meeting was held via teleconference.

The AGM approved the 2011 Audited Financial Statements for CanGEA and announced the selection of Porter Hetu International as its auditor for 2012. The Executive Director provided an overview over the last 12 months, including details on government related activities, the development of membership in the Association, the two events held in 2011 and reports contributed or written by CanGEA.

CanGEA would like to thank John McIlveen of Jacob Securities for his long-term contribution to CanGEA as Treasurer of the Association. He has now effectively left the Board.

The Board Members of CanGEA for the year 2012 are:

CanGEA thanks the represented member companies for attending the AGM and their continued support of CanGEA in its activities to promote geothermal energy development in Canada,

CanGEA Key initiatives 2012-2014 and funding drive

February 20th 2012 - For the first time we are nearing a tipping point for geothermal with our key initiatives and recent government interest. This is why we are now pushing a few key initiatives that we see as a potential catalyzer for driving geothermal development in Canada.

Membership and initiative funding from companies will help us successfully bring geothermal to market and eventually benefit companies, who have taken the opportunity to gain international experience they can bring home to Canada.

Having secured government funding for some of our initiatives, the government looks for us to get matching funding to leverage their contribution, but also see industry players get involved. We are therefore calling for your support. For details see the Funding Drive Overview and don´t hesitate to contact us for any questions.

Our key initiatives for 2012-2104:

Furthermore we will continue cooperate with our partner organizations internationally, promote the Canadian Geothermal Reporting Code and promote geothermal energy opportunities and the industry in Canada.

CanGEA releases Canadian Geothermal Project Overview 2012

February 3, 2012 - CanGEA as the collective voice of Canada's geothermal energy industry publishes this report to provide an overview of geothermal projects for power production and direct use.  A listing of Canada’s natural occurring hot springs is also included.

GSC Report On Canada's Geothermal Energy Resource Potential

July 5th 2011 - In June 2011, the Geological Survey of Canada and a team of leading scientists in the field of geothermal energy have released a report detailing the geothermal energy resource potential for geothermal energy in Canada.

The Canadian Geothermal Energy Association (CanGEA) congratulates the Geological Survey of Canada and the team that worked on the report. The report confirms that “geothermal energy, as a renewable energy source, not only provides a clean and renewable option for electricity generation around the clock, but also efficient and competitive heating options for Canadians all over Canada”, said Alexander Richter, Director of the Canadian Geothermal Energy Association.

In its key findings, the report highlights “enormous geothermal energy resources that could supply the country with a renewable and clean source of power”, and with the high capacity factor makes it a “particularly attractive as a renewable base load energy supply” for Canada.

Other key highlights of the report:

  • Geothermal energy potential is broadly distributed across Canada, however, there is only sufficient data to characterize geothermal potential for 40% of Canada’s landmass.
  • Canada's in-place geothermal power exceeds one million times Canada's current electrical consumption, although only a fraction of this can likely be produced.
  • Remote northern communities could be the first to benefit from geothermal development in Canada.
  • Canada has significant potential for EGS development, as few as 100 projects could meet a significant fraction of Canada’s base load energy needs.
  • Research on decreasing installation costs could make further exploitation of abundant low-temperature geothermal resources feasible.
  • Environmental impacts of geothermal development are relatively minor compared to other energy developments, however there are still key issues to be addressed.
  • Geothermal installations have the potential to displace other more costly and environmentally damaging technologies.
  • Geoscience research and mapping is required to reduce exploration risk as well as to support regulatory development in order to attract industry investment.

CanGEA co-founding International Geothermal Business Coalition

May 4, 2011 - In an historic accord, the members of several leading national geothermal trade and business associations have joined together to establish an international geothermal business coalition.

The new International Geothermal Business Coalition, co-founded by the European Geothermal Energy Council (EGEC), the U.S. Geothermal Energy Association (GEA), the Canadian Geothermal Energy Association (CanGEA), the Australian Geothermal Energy Association (AGEA), and the Chilean Geothermal Energy Association, will represent the leading companies in developing geothermal resources to meet energy needs across the world.

The new geothermal coalition will work to expand efforts to utilize these valuable geothermal resources in every nation. With the vast potential that geothermal has to create clean, renewable base-load energy and bring jobs to the nations that embrace it, the coalition leaders will work to ensure that geothermal resources are not ignored in national and international energy plans.

The Canadian Geothermal Code for Public Reporting

The Canadian Geothermal Energy Association (CanGEA) presented the “Canadian Geothermal Code for Public Reporting” in 2010. The Code provides a minimum set of requirements for the public reporting of exploration results, geothermal resources and geothermal reserves. It provides a basis for transparency, consistency and confidence in the public reporting of geothermal information.
